It was a groundbreaking occasion

The Village Hall/Shop building project is now underway at last.  Groundbreaking took place on 15 February 2008.  The building is scheduled for completion this coming September.   Project funding comes from Coleraine Borough Council and the Rural Development Council’s Peace II programme.  There will be a meeting room, kitchen and main hall, which can be subdivided, that will seat up to 140.  If you want to get involved or are looking for more information, contact Ian or Suzanne (info below).

It’s Official-- Portballintrae has a bathing beach

The Environment and Heritage Service has notified us that as of this year the Salmon Rock beach (formerly known as the Beach Hotel beach) will be officially designated as a bathing beach. The Main Bay and Runkerry Strand have not been designated because of low usage numbers last year.  These beaches will hopefully be properly recognized in the near future.  Thanks to everyone who came out and proved that Portballintrae DOES have beaches!

Do you have a Secret Garden?

Ian Binnie visited the village of Midlem in Scotland last year where villagers open their gardens for a day to the public to raise money for charities. Although it is quite a small place, 14 people opened their gardens. Some also had plant stalls, and teas were available in the village hall. It was a most enjoyable way to spend an afternoon, and the owners of the gardens seemed to be happy to meet their guests, answer questions and offer suggestions about plants. On arrival, visitors paid £2.00 for a ticket and were given a map of the route with the open gardens clearly marked. Each garden had a number, which was displayed on a notice at the gate. Teas were charged separately.

As Portballintrae has many enthusiastic gardeners and beautiful gardens it might be enjoyable and informative way to raise money for village projects. If you would like to open your garden for the day, or are interested in helping out, contact Suzanne Mortimer, secretary, Tel. 20732685 or by email secretary@portballintrae.net..

PSNI want you to know:  False Alarms and Bogus Callers

Do you have an intruder alarm system fitted in your home? While alarm systems can be a great asset to home security, Police have received complaints regarding repetitive activations of alarms fitted in this area. A great majority of these activations are indeed false alarms. You may not be fully aware of the nuisance being caused locally to your neighbours.

The PSNI requests that all homeowners with alarms fitted have them properly maintained and checked on a regular basis. You might also consider having a dialling facility fitted to the system so that you will be made aware of any activation yourself.  Nuisance alarms can be reported to the Environmental Health department as noise pollution.

Tips on stopping bogus callers

They may pose as water, gas-board or electricity employees, council workers or even police officers, so that they can steal money from your home. You can prevent this type of crime if you take precautions. To reduce the risk of your becoming a victim, remember the following three simple steps:

1:  STOP …before you open the door

         2:  CHAIN…. Put it on

3:  CHECK…ask the caller for ID and check it before letting them in. Use the phone number in the PHONE BOOK, not on the ID card.

If you would like any advice regarding this or any other aspect of crime prevention please do not hesitate to contact police at Portrush or Coleraine. The Police non-emergency contact number – 0845 600 8000

Join us for World Ocean’s Day and Beach Clean

On 7 June 2008 at 2 p.m. Portballintrae in conjunction with Coleraine Borough Council will be holding a joint clean up of the main beach at Portballintrae Harbour.  Jim Allen, of Coleraine Borough Council and the coordinator of the event said, “The event will not only highlight the problem of marine debris and beach litter in general but specifically the impacts of this form of pollution on marine and coastal biodiversity including tourism and visitor experience.  I believe that we can maximise our contribution to the event by focusing on certain parts of the debris that we recover and remove. I have done a minor study in the bay on the amounts and types of waste associated with recreational fishing/angling e.g. line, lures, bait bags etc. We can also survey the amounts of plastic bags that we recover and in so doing contribute to Council’s efforts to target certain polluters.”

Council will be supplying all the necessary gloves and collection bags. All you need to do is come along.   It is not only a chance to beautify our main beach, but you can meet your neighbours and have some fun.
