Work has now begun on the new upgraded state-of-the-art Waste Water Treatment Facility
in Bushmillsand the upgrading of facilities in Portballintrae.
Pipes are being laid on Bayhead Road and Ballaghmore Road. There will be traffic lights
in place for some weeks to come. After the new sewer pipes are laid all road surfaces will
be completelt upgraded as well.
The village system is to include two improved pumping stations: one at Seaport Avenue
and one at the Caravan park pumping station. The existing Wastewater Treatment works
will have revamped tanks to be used to hold storm water during prolonged periods of
heavy rain.
All raw effluent will be pumped to the Bushmills WwTW where it will receive secondary,
also known as biological, treatment. The plan includes screening using native trees and
shrubs so that the plant cannot be
seen. Work is due to commence at the existing treatment works in March. Work is set to
start in Portballintrae in October and is due to run until March 2010 with the completed
Wastewater treatment operations scheduled to be fully online in August 2010.
This long awaited £6.5 million project will make our beaches and the River Bush cleaner
and safer for all to enjoy. HereÕs hoping for a Blue Flag Beach soon!
